What is an RFID scanner?

Ok I heard about this RFID scanner that is able to scan your credit cards magnetic strip without you even swiping your card, just havjng it near it will read your card!

Is this possible? Why would they use it? have you ever seen one? Let me know if yoh find anything on this!!!

These 'tags' can be put on anything really.
They have no self-contained power, but when they enter the radio range of an RFID scanning device, the tag then spits out whatever info it has.
Ostensibly, they are helpful, but as we've seen so many times, this technology can be used for evil.
The RFID has little or no encryption; and divulges info to ANY device that queries it...which means a credit card with RFID will vomit it's data to a crook with some low cost scanner...even if it's in your wallet or purse.
They are now on some new tires, so when you drive down a highway, scanners can pick up it's data, and track who you are, where you are, and correlate that with just about anyone.

Here's a Google index of Schneier's op-ed's: https://encrypted.google.com/search?doma…

It is a scanner used to obtain ones credit card info and for identity theft. many new credit cards issued have magnetic strips that hold the card holders info as well as the credit card number.

What is an RFID scanner: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio-frequ…
